The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) is a temporary scheme open to UK employers for at least three months starting from 1st March 2020. It is designed to support employers whose operations have been severely affected by coronavirus (COVID-19). This scheme will reimburse certain salary and wage related expenditure to employers should they need to place employees on furloughed arrangements, i.e. a leave of absence.

The HMRC guidance states employers can claim for a portion of employee wages if they are placed on furlough arrangements. Under the CJRS, the employer is entitled to claim back 80% of furloughed employee’s usual monthly wage costs, this is capped at £2,500 per month. In addition, other employer costs, namely National Insurance and pension contributions, can also be claimed on the furlough pay. Employers can use this scheme at any time throughout the duration of the scheme.
